Introducing Tom Wood Osaka, a dedicated shop-in-shop located at Shinsaibashi PARCO. The new location marks our first retail space in the city, continuing the journey of our brand universe.
The concept
Tom Wood Osaka marks a defining chapter in our brand journey, celebrating our presence in the new city. Located on the second floor of Shinsaibashi PARCO in the South district of Osaka, the dedicated space merges Nordic design codes with Japanese craftsmanship to create a unique retail environment. Drawing inspiration from Nordic cabin and sauna culture, the curated space offers an escape from the busy retail surroundings into a calm retreat. The curved facade features a sheltered wall section, subtly drawing visitors inside while echoing the feeling of entering a sheltered cabin space.
The curved facade is designed in our signature raked finish: a raw, tactile element and recurring theme seen in the Aoyama and Shibuya flagship stores. Treated with a slightly darker finish, the exterior creates a distinct contrast against the light, airy interior, further highlighting the transition from public to private space.
The interior evolves as a light, airy atmosphere, centered around the 3.6 meters central counter in metallic steel, a solid anchor point throughout the store. The walls are lined with recycled fiber boards, a recurring element in our retail locations, adding subtle texture and tactile warmth. Jewellery displays are fully integrated into the walls, offering a seamless spatial experience that merge architectural language and product display. The displays feature a linear shelf running alongside the wall, accompanied by a curved section that adds a fluid element to the space, juxtaposing the solid materials and further emphasizing the store’s soft, geometrical language.
Partly inspired by the Norwegian cabin and sauna culture, the design feels like bringing a piece of Norway to Japan. We wanted to create a small hide-away from the busy surroundings, allowing for a more private customer experience.
A modern spatial experience
The Osaka shop-in-shop is designed together with Torafu Architects, the renowned architecture firm behind our Shibuya flagship. For the Osaka store, the architects created an atmosphere that resembles the minimalistic rest huts found in the Norwegian countryside, incorporating a sense of calm and quietness.
The commitment to responsible craftsmanship is an anchor point in our brand ethos, further translated into our retail locations. Materials like 100% recycled aluminium, mirrored glass, and Kvadrat boards are a central part of our architectural language, creating a cohesive store experience and streamlined language across our different locations, while emphasizing our commitment to responsibility and innovation.
Inspired by the minimal rest huts found in the Norwegian countryside, the space incorporates an intimate scale and a sense of quietness. It creates a setting for a calm and focused engagement with the products; an otherworldly presence that quietly emerges within the everyday, offering a spatial experience found only here.
The Exhibition: ‘A Journey in Craft’
In celebration of the Osaka store opening, we present ‘A Journey in Craft’, offering an immersive look into the Tom Wood universe. The curated exhibition explores the elements that define our brand, from our Norwegian origins to the uncompromising commitment to responsibility and craftsmanship.
Following the journey of our brand, the exhibition unfolds as a study in process and intention. Each element reflects the way objects come to life: through precision, restraint, and a deep respect for materials. Visit the exhibition between 12 and 28 June at Shinsaibashi PARCO, 9th floor.
