FAQ Jewellery Care

Precious metals

Our new products are now made with 100% recycled silver, gold, and rhodium, effectively slashing our jewellery’s carbon footprint by over 90%.

All our jewellery is treated with an anti-tarnish treatment. We normally plate our 925 sterling silver jewellery with a white rhodium plating to provide a strong and resistant surface. Nevertheless, silver might oxidise over time. To prevent this as much as possible, gently wipe your jewellery clean with a soft cloth after each wear to remove any dirt or oil. Silver polish can also be bought at most jewellers and goldsmiths.

925 sterling silver is considered a ‘soft’ metal. Chunky jewellery made of silver, like Tom Wood signet rings, are more easily exposed to collisions with other surfaces, which might create dents and small scratches. Over time, dents and scratches will blend into each other and the surface of the ring will become ‘softer’, and the individual marks become less visible. Scratches and small dents are not considered a defect, but rather a normal sign of wear and tear.

Our gold-plated jewellery is plated with 1 micron 18k gold. Plating will naturally wear off over time depending on usage, and can be re-plated by a professional jeweller. As we have created our own unique gold-finish, any plating or repairs at a jeweller may result in slightly differing finishes from the original.

Stones and stone settings

Our use of natural stones will always result in differing and unique patterns for each one of our pieces. Please note all our stones are ethically sourced and of high quality.

Different natural stones have different hardnesses, but all stones are fragile and might break or chip, should they collide with a hard surface or be dropped. Rings and pieces with stones around the whole style should therefore always be worn gently, to prevent stones being damaged or shattering.

Please remember that no jewellery should be pulled or re-sized out of shape. Especially cocktail jewellery, like our Cocktail Rings, Pinkie Rings and Ear Cuffs should never be pressed out of shape or bent, as this may cause the original stone settings to loosen, and stones to detach.

Depending on your frequency of use, the need for it may vary, but we advise annual inspections and cleaning of jewellery with stone settings, to ensure that all settings and stones are intact. Cleaning stone settings should be done at a goldsmith or jeweller, as they are fragile and can easily be damaged if not cleaned correctly.

Chains and bracelets

Please make sure to familiarise yourself with the functionality of our locks before attempting to open them.

Do not use force to attempt to force open a lock, should you experience issues, as this may damage the clasp mechanism.

Make sure not to store any chain in a tangled state, and place them in a soft pouch, or in a jewellery box to prevent them from being bent or breaking.

How to open our snap-lock

To open a snap-lock, start by opening the eight-locks on each side before pinching the lock together and pulling it it, carefully.

The eight-locks add extra security to your necklace and bracelet's locking mechanism. Please avoid using force when opening and closing locks, so that the mechanism is not bent or otherwise damaged.

How to open our earrings

Please do not apply force when opening and closing your earrings. The pin which goes through the ear is delicate, and could bend, or the locking mechanism be damaged.

Should the pin become unaligned, please be careful in realigning it, as demonstrated in the below video. We recommend you seek assistance from an official Tom Wood retailer, if you have one in your vicinity.

Please be aware that, if you wear multiple ear pieces in one ear, the platings might wear off more easily, due to the metal surfaces potentially scuffing at each other.

We ask our customers to remember that irritations might occur when you wear ear piercings, and may be due to a type of metal in the alloy, as all alloys are a blend of different metals. We do not use any nickel in our alloy, for any of our jewellery.

Is your jewellery suitable for sensitive skin?

Our jewellery pieces are suitable for sensitive skin. We utilise high-quality metal alloys to ensure comfort and safety for all our customers.

If you have any concerns or are experience sensitivity, please contact our customer support team for further assistance.

How do I to prevent damage to my jewellery?

To keep your jewellery looking polished and nice for years to come, special attention is required. We advise that our customers avoid direct contact with water and chemical products, such as soaps, perfumes and other cosmetic products. Makeup, hairspray and perfume may dull the finish of your jewellery and cause discolouration and oxidation over time.

Natural stones, such as those used in our pieces, can also be affected by chemical, damp conditions, pressure, or knocks agains other surfaces. Remove your jewellery when doing things like household work, and do not wear it when in a pool, jacuzzi, sauna/steam room or while bathing, showering or sleeping. Keep your jewellery away from all sources of heat.

925 sterling silver is considered a ‘soft’ metal. Chunky jewellery made of silver, like Tom Wood signet rings, are more easily exposed to collisions with other surfaces, which might create dents and small scratches. Which products do you recommend for cleaning jewellery?

For cleaning your Tom Wood jewelry, we recommend using Hagerty cleaning products. Hagerty are known for their effectiveness and gentle care, which helps keep your jewellery in pristine condition for longer.

We are continually working to enhance our customer experience, and in the near future, we are aspiring to producing our own line of cleaning products, specifically tailored for Tom Wood jewellery.

How should I store my jewellery?

Properly storing your jewellery will help shield it from exposure to direct sunlight and other factors which may damage it.

We recommend storing your jewellery in a dry place, preferably individually, in the accompanying Tom Wood jewellery box or pouch, as this helps in preserving the jewellery. Do not keep your jewellery in the bathroom as humidity, makeup, perfume and hairspray may dull the finish of your jewellery and cause discolouration and oxidation.

Will plated Tom Wood jewellery fade over time?

While solid gold and silver jewellery are resilient to fading, plated jewellery will naturally fade over time. How fast depends on usage and care, and whether you ear several pieces on top of each other, causing friction between the metal surfaces.

Fortunately, jewellery can easily be re-plated by a jeweller. Visit your nearest Tom Wood store or retailer to get help with this, or contact your local jeweller.

My earrings no loger lock in place - how can i fix this?

As earrings are often open and closed frequently, this is a rather common case. As sterling silver is a soft metal, the delicate pin can easily get bent from normal wear and tear. We advise that you apply light pressure on the pin to direct it upwards ever so slightly. Once back in its original spot, you should hear the clicking of the lock upon closing.

Be gentle when realigning the pin, and note that we take no responsibility, should it break. If your attempts at correcting the pin does not work, or if you are not comfortable attempting this method yourself, please reach out to our customer service for further assistance.

FAQ Product information

How do I find my ring size?

Ring sizes can vary due to factors like hand dominance, temperature, and the time of day. Since our dominant hands are usually slightly larger, it’s important to measure the hand where the ring will be worn.

Slim bands, Such as the Infinity Band Slim, tend to fit more loosely, so you might need to size down slightly to prevent them from spinning. Medium bands, such as the Peaky Ring Polished Onyx, typically fit true to size and don’t require adjustments. For thicker bands, such as the Cushion Black Onyx, sizing up by at least half a size is recommended to ensure comfort, as the added width makes them feel tighter.

To get the most accurate measurement, it’s best to measure your finger when your body temperature is normal. Cold weather can cause your fingers to shrink, while heat makes them expand.

Since finger size fluctuates throughout the day due to hydration and diet, measuring towards the middle or end of the day gives a more reliable result. If you have a pronounced knuckle, measure both the knuckle and the base of your finger, then choose a size that slides over the knuckle snugly without feeling too tight or loose.

Read more about our ring size guide here.

Will you restock the items that are currently out of stock?

Unfortunately, if a product is marked “out of stock”, it is currently sold out.

However, we do restock most of our jewellery styles regularly, which are then made available in the online store as soon as possible. We recommend you sign up for Notify Me on the desired product, to receive a notification once it is back in stock.

You may contact us by email and let us know the name and size of the product you want, and we can check the estimated arrival of the specific product.

What size should I order?

Check out our size guide to find the perfect size for your finger.

If you are unsure of your finger size, we recommend that you have your finger measured by a local goldsmith.

Measure your finger at the end of the day when it is at its fullest. Your dominant hand is often a little larger, so you should measure the hand on which you plan to wear the ring.

If you're between sizes, it's usually best to size up for comfort, and rings with wider bands (such as Cushion Black Onyx) tend to feel tight, so consider sizing up a half size for a better fit.

The size I ordered is wrong, can I resize the ring?

If your ring feels a little too tight or loose after wearing it, we recommend visiting a local goldsmith who can provide you with a second opinion and may be able to assist with resizing.

Please be aware that many goldsmiths are hesitant to resize rings with stone settings, as there's a risk of damaging the stones.

Additionally, a resized ring that experiences damage, such as a broken top plate, would not qualify as a claim under our policy. Please note that any alterations made by a third party without prior arrangement with us will void the warranty on your product.

How do I take care of my Tom Wood jewellery?

Taking care of your jewellery is important for several reasons:

Regular cleaning and upkeep can ensure that your jewellery stays in good condition and maintains its shine and lustre.

Some types of jewellery, such as those made from delicate materials or containing gemstones, require specific care to avoid damage.

By taking care of your jewellery, you can prolong its lifespan and enjoy it for years to come.
For general guidelines on how to take care of your Tom Wood Jewellery, see our Jewellery Care-guide.

My ring has tarnished, what do I do?

All jewellery can unfortunately experience tarnishing, as a direct result of exposure to air and chemicals.

Try cleaning the piece with silver polish, which can be found at any goldsmiths, and at many grocery stores.

You can also deliver the ring to a local goldsmith for polishing. We recommend also plating your jewellery rhodium, to help it be more scratch resistant after the polishing.

Do you do custom engravings?

We currently offer engraving of rings purchased at our online store, as well as in our official Tom Wood-stores in Oslo and Aoyama.

Should you be interested, please reach out to us at hello@tomwoodproject.com.

Read more about engraving here.

What is the delivery time for a made-to-order item?

Most gold and cocktail rings are custom made and 10-12 weeks delivery time needs to be estimated for orders of these styles.

We do not permit return for Made-To-Order purchases, as the rings are especially produced for each individual customer. An e-mail requesting that you agree to these terms will be sent to the registered e-mail before your order is sent on to production.

Where is your jewellery produced, and from where are the stones sourced?

Tom Wood jewellery is produced at a small selection of highly skilled factories just outside Bangkok, Thailand.

The stones are sourced from all over the world, and are all acquired on ethical terms.

Tom Wood is committed to innovation and responsibility. By transitioning to lab-grown diamonds from ALTR, we significantly reduce our environmental impact, enhance ethical sourcing, and align our materials with the principles of modern luxury.

What are the responsibility benefits of Tom Wood's lab-grown diamonds from ALTR?

Tom Wood’s transition to Lab Grown Diamonds ensures every diamond is grown, cut, and polished to the highest responsibility standards, providing complete transparency and ensuring ethical sourcing with a responsible origin. ALTR’s production is 100% carbon neutral and powered entirely by renewable energy, primarily solar panels, significantly reducing climate impact. In addition, ALTR holds a SCS-007 Certificate with a perfect score of 100 – an independent, internationally recognized standard verifying climate neutrality, ethical practices, and sustainability leadership in the diamond industry.

Will all Tom Wood diamonds be lab-grown?

Yes – as of June 2025, all diamond products produced by Tom Wood will exclusively feature lab-grown diamonds.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. The only difference lies in their origin: they are created above ground rather than extracted from the earth.

What is the origin of Tom Wood's lab-grown diamonds?

Tom Wood sources its lab-grown diamonds exclusively from ALTR Created Diamonds. ALTR’s headquarters are located in New York, with growing and cutting facilities based in India.

What responsibility qualities do Tom Wood's lab-grown diamonds have?

The lab-grown diamonds we use from ALTR are produced with the highest responsibility standards. ALTR is SCS-007 Certified with a perfect score of 100. Their production process is entirely carbon neutral and powered exclusively by renewable energy sources (Solar Energy).

How are the lab-grown diamonds that Tom Wood uses made?

The diamonds are created using a technique called CVD, or Chemical Vapor Deposition. A thin diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber, which is heated to approximately 1000 C and filled with carbon-rich gas. The gas ionizes, breaking down and releasing pure carbon atoms, which bond to the seed. This process continues layer by layer until a complete diamond is formed. The rough diamond is then cut and polished into its final shape. To learn more, we recommend watching this video from ALTR.

Can Tom Wood ensure traceability for its lab-grown diamonds?

Yes. We guarantee full traceability through detailed documentation and a verified chain of custody provided by our supplier, ALTR, and our manufacturing partners. Knowing the source of our diamonds, ensures that they have not passed through any conflict zones.
