THE CREATIVE FOUNDATION

Before the jewellery production begins, a period of deep exploration takes place in the design and development phase, where inspiration, initial research and ideation turns into final prototypes through careful evaluation and testing.

01 THE MOLD

After finalising the prototypes in the product development stage, the master mold is created, a high-precision reference piece for future production. The master is encased in rubber to create a negative space. This resulting rubber mold becomes the blueprint for production, allowing us to scale the design for our collections. For more intricate designs, wax models are directly printed based on 3D files.

This collaboration extends to our long-term suppliers; a vital part of upholding our rigorous standards for sustainable practice while driving meaningful change to address the challenges facing our industry.

02 THE WAX FORMATION

After the mold is created, the individual wax replicas are made by infusing wax into the rubber mold. Each wax model is then fused onto a central stem using heat to ensure strong adhesion and proper spacing. Forming the shape of a “wax tree”, the structure allows multiple pieces to be cast simultaneously, increasing both production efficiency and waste reduction.

03 CASTING

The completed wax tree is placed into a casting cylinder and filled with liquid plaster. Once hardened, the cylinder is placed into a high-temperature industrial oven that melts away the wax, leaving a negative imprint inside the plaster. Melted precious metal, in 100% recycled 925 sterling silver or recycled 9k gold, are poured into the cylinder filling the negative space. Once cooled with water, the plaster is blasted away from the cylinder to reveal the newly cast silver tree. This meticulous step sets the foundation for the finished pieces, ensuring the casting is done to perfection to avoid puriosity or flaws in the surface; striving to ensure that no material is left out by chance.

RECYCLED & REPURPOSED MATERIALS

In our collections, we use 100% recycled silver and gold as a commitment to quality and responsibility. Certified and fully traceable back to the refinery, this ensures that our production begins with a commitment to responsible craft. As silver becomes an increasingly precious resource, we strive to treat every fragment with the respect it deserves, viewing each piece as an asset to be preserved and repurposed.

Each silver piece is cut from the silver tree formation, revealing the jewellery in its raw and untreated state with the attached silver sprues. This stage highlights the circularity of our process, as the remaining silver sprues are collected and recycled for future production. By striving to repurpose every fragment of precious metal, we ensure that our dedication to responsible craftsmanship is embedded in every stage of the journey.

04 FILING & POLISHING

After the silver sprues are removed, the jewellers carefully file the piece to smooth rough edges. Polishing represents the epitome of our journey, ensuring that each piece is perfected in both shape and design. This requires a meticulous eye for detail and form, a role reserved for the most skilled artisans. Working with precision, the craftsman polish the completed pieces to ensure a smooth finish. The process often involves multiple rounds of refinement, requiring the team to be meticulous, since over-polishing can lose the original shape of the piece.

Each Tom Wood piece is crafted by hand, one by one, bearing the mark of the maker. Human craft represents a commitment to time and precision, ensuring that a measured pace and meticulous care is woven into every piece.

05 SOURCING & SHAPING STONES

Stone selection and responsible sourcing is a vital part of the production process; a step of intention and careful consideration, starting with the raw material. Our vision is to ensure full traceability into the gemstones we use, upholding transparency in every step.

The gemstones are carefully sourced and custom-cut one by one, then mounted on dop sticks and filed against abrasive wheels to ensure the proper shape and polishing. This meticulous process creates the perfect facets and shapes required for each unique setting.

Mother Of Pearl
Raw materials, made by nature. Mother of Pearl is a delicate accent in our collections, requiring a sense of restraint to preserve its organic form. Traditionally carved from the inner iridescent layer of oyster and mollusk shells, each piece is handled with care to honor its natural origin, bringing a unique, ethereal glow to our pieces.

Larvikite
An ode to our heritage. Larvikite is our treasured national stone sourced directly from the Lundhs quarry in Larvik, Norway. The stone is a core element in our Cove collection, meticulously shaped to celebrate the rugged beauty of the Norwegian landscape. As part of our commitment to responsible sourcing and full material utilisation, we work with Larvikite that originates as a by-product of quarrying at the Lundhs quarry in Larvik. Rather than treating this as waste material, we recognise its inherent qualities and long-standing significance within Norwegian craftsmanship and design.

06 STONE SETTING

Each setting is carefully considered to protect the stone, supporting longevity and extending the lifespan of every piece. Artisans start by carving a precise "seat" within the metal. Bezel settings fold metal edges over the stone for a flush look, while prong settings use tiny claws to hold the gemstone, allowing light to pass through.

07 PLATING

To enhance durability, colour and ensure a high-polished finish, the pieces undergo electroplating, where an electric current bonds a thin layer of gold or white rhodium to the surface of the silver. In line with our commitment to circularity, we utilize recycled plating materials, a rare standard in the industry that embeds responsibility in the final touch of the design.

08 QUALITY CONTROL

Every piece is inspected at multiple stages, from the initial cast to the final plating. After a preliminary check at the factory, a final quality inspection is conducted at our HQ in Oslo, Norway, to ensure the craftsmanship meets our rigorous standards. This step marks a vital thread in our production process; ensuring that standards are being met to minimise material waste and honour the time invested in every handcrafted design.

09 THE FINAL FORM
