THE CONCEPT
Tom Wood Flagship Store Tokyo serves as a testament to innovation and sustainable practices, and is designed in collaboration with Swedish design agency Specific Generic.
Having previously collaborated with the Stockholm-based multidisciplinary design agency since 2020 and for the Flagship Store in Oslo, they have together with Tom Wood created an elevated space that goes beyond consumer experience. Across 320m2 split by two floors, the brand celebrates its Nordic heritage while exploring the appreciation for Japanese culture. As Morten Isachsen, CEO of Tom Wood says, "This store represents the intersection of our brand, our products and people." The ground floor nods to Tom Wood`s contemporary aesthetic and commitment to responsibility where height, linearity and texture are central to the design.
Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls divide the space displaying a selection of jewellery, some of which can only be found in the Tokyo Flagship. A 9-metre long wooden cashier desk with integrated jewellery cabinets stands in front of tall archive walls that functions as storage and displays. Long-lasting materials are prioritized including aluminium, steel, glass and Kvadrat Really, made from up-cycled-end-of-life textiles, designed to be reused and fully circular. Unique custom furniture pieces are created by renowned industry designer Daisuke Yamamoto using recycled LGS (lightweight gauge steel). The pieces are designed with future deconstruction in mind and with the focus on creating a sustainable material life cycle.
THE APARTMENT
On the second floor a private gallery and apartment awaits. Here, art and design curated by Tom Wood´s creative director and founder, Mona Jensen, is displayed in a private space dubbed as "The Apartment".
“The idea was to bring parts of Norway to Japan, and to share my passion for great craftsmanship and design by curating the space as if it was my own home”, says Mona Jensen, founder and creative director of Tom Wood. While the space is closed on a regular basis, it will occasionally be open for events, talks, private dinners and tours led by Tom Wood employees.
