The making of Maze

The creation of Maze

For Mona Jensen, Creative Director of Tom Wood, architecture is often where she draws inspiration from. After the success of the Mesh ring in 2023, there was a desire to further explore the concept of seeing through solid objects, with an unexpected, contemporary twist. That was the start of Maze.

When we first introduced the Mesh ring in 2023, I knew I wanted to come back to this pattern, exploring the concept of seeing through solid objects.

At the beginning, the idea was to create a curb chain using this intricate Mesh technique, but the production complexities made it difficult. It did however open the doors to new possibilities, including a broader collection including rings, hoops, collars, and bangles. “When we develop a new collection, it’s important to me that we push the boundaries of what is possible”.

As technology increasingly influences our lives, there’s a natural evolution in jewellery production. It invites us to reconsider established norms and pursue new ideas in jewellery creation. With Maze, the ambition was to challenge traditional design norms and push the boundaries of innovation.

The creation of the Maze collection unfolds through several stages. Each piece is individually printed in wax which takes several hours, before moving onto the casting process. The intricate mesh pattern requires a specific attention to detail compared to traditional jewellery. Unlike conventional jewellery, the transparent design of Maze leaves no room for hidden imperfections. The final result of the collection is only made possible through the collaborative effort between our designers and the best craftsmen in the industry.

From design to production, sustainability and longevity are at the heart of our process. The Maze collection, like all our pieces, is crafted exclusively from recycled precious metals, significantly reducing our environmental footprint. The carbon footprint of recycled metals is reduced by over 90% compared to that of virgin materials. As a Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) certified brand, we are committed to responsible sourcing and ethical production, partnering exclusively with RJC-certified manufacturers to uphold the highest standards in crafting our jewellery.
